Images of Text

Whenever possible, text must be used to communicate information rather than an image of text.

Requirements

  • Text must be used to communicate information rather than an image of text
  • Text can be customized by the user (i.e. font size, font family, font colour and background can be changed)

Why it matters

  • People with low vision (who may have trouble reading the text with the authored font family, size and/or colour)
  • People with visual tracking problems (who may have trouble reading the text with the authored line spacing and/or alignment)
  • People who are visually impaired and use assistive technology such as a screen reader
  • People with cognitive disabilities that affect reading

Exceptions

There are a few exceptions when using images of text. It is recommended to ensure text displayed is not critical to conveying the message.

  • Text that is part of the scene or in the environment
  • Text that is part of an object such as a computer screen or credit card
  • Logos and trademarks

Definitions

  • Image of text: Text that has been displayed in a non-text form (e.g., an image)
  • Text: A sequence of characters expressing something in human language
  • Customized: The font style, font size, font colour, and background can be changed by the Guest using assistive technologies
