Visualization Icons
Icons should provide quick visual hints. For example, a “home” icon could signify going to the main page of a dashboard.
When to use icons
- When space is tight, and you have a long text that can be replaced by an icon.
- When the same action or information is represented in multiple places, using a consistent icon can aid in recognition.
- Icons can draw attention to specific points or categories within your data visualization.
How to use icons
- Ensure the same icon represents the same information or action throughout your visualization or report.
- Choose icons that are straightforward and easily recognizable. Overly complex icons can confuse users.
- Icons should be large enough to be visible but not large to the point they dominate the visualization or make the data visualization feel cluttered.
- Icons can be coloured to match or complement the visualization’s colour scheme. However, ensure that the colour doesn’t alter the icon’s meaning.
Best practices
- Avoid icon overuse. Too many icons can make your visualization look cluttered and confusing.
- Test with your main audience/persona. What might be intuitive to one person might be confusing to another. Gather feedback to ensure your icons resonate with your target audience.
- Consider users with visual impairments. Icons should not be the sole means of conveying information. Pair them with text or tooltips where appropriate.
- Icons are more flexible and easier to use in SVG format
