Health and Medical

These guidelines are a reference for UX Writers, Web Writers and Content strategists writing for the WestJet. It helps writers create clear and consistent content across teams and channels. In some instances, you can copy and paste directly from the guidelines. In others, you can use this as a reference for the correct language and terms.

Terminology

  • In the forms or the content for the physicians, use patient instead of guest
  • Use the term “attendant” instead of companion, guide, etc. to refer to the person accompanying the patient
  • Always use physician to refer to doctor
  • Illnesses, lists etc. should be listed alphabetically

Formatting

Capitalization

  • Medical Desk: Always capitalize the M and the D
  • Medical Desk email address: MedDesk@WestJet.com; capitalize M, D, W and J
  • Information for Health Care Providers Document: Always capitalize the I, H, C, P, and D
  • Illnesses are not capitalized unless at the start of a sentence
  • Physician types are not capitalized: ex: ophthalmologist

Numbers

All numbers should be numerical not written out.

Symbols

Symbols are used ONLY in tables/charts on the Medical Desk pages.

< (smaller than)

No space at the end of the symbols

  • ✅ Hgb >90g/L
  • ❌ Hgb > 90g/L

Acronyms

  • MEDIF: Internally used acronym for the Medical Information Form that is also used in tables/forms to reduce word count
  • O2: Oxygen
  • PaO2: Partial pressure of oxygen
  • CXR: Chest X-ray
  • DVT: Deep vein thrombosis
  • COPD: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Hgb: Hemoglobin
  • L/minute: Liter per minute
  • EF: Ejection fraction heart failure (ex: EF >45%)
  • MI: Myocardial infection (ex: MI >2 weeks)
  • NYHA: New York Heart Association
  • CCS: Canadian Cardiovascular Society
  • m: Meters
  • g: Grams
