Small description

Medium description
WestJet Rewards has three credit card options to help members earn even more WestJet points that can be redeemed on future travel. See our credit cards to learn which card is best to help you get closer to your next trip.
Long description
WestJet offers two credit card options for earning WestJet points: the WestJet RBC® Mastercard‡ and the WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard‡. Both options give cardholders the opportunity to earn WestJet points on their purchases and help get you closer to your next trip. WestJet points earned on credit card spend are in addition to any WestJet points earned directly with WestJet or WestJet Vacations. Members do not earn WestJet points on Sunwing Vacations.
Business rules and related content patterns
Annual companion voucher qualification
Annual spending requirement:
- MC2: $2,500 per year
- MC4: $5,000 per year
- Guests become "qualified" for their annual companion voucher
- Context: this is a new requirement that guests have not seen in previous years or decades of flying with WestJet. Teaching users about this is important for the Loyalty Marketing stakeholders.
Spending period begins in the first full month after your first credit card statement is issued.
- Example: You sign up on July 17th, and you receive a statement covering part of July. Your annual spending qualification period would start in August, running through July of the following year. That’s now your 12-month spending period every year moving forward.
- Sample: “1,000 CAD away from your next annual companion voucher”
Naming in tight UI: We've agreed to shorten this to “annual voucher” if the content string is contextualized by a header or subheader containing “annual companion voucher. It’s a long phrase that takes up valuable space in tight UI.
Annual vs. Milestone companion vouchers: “annual companion voucher” distinguishes credit card companion vouchers from Milestone Award companion vouchers, which have some different rules.
- Sample (Error): “Annual companion voucher progress is temporarily unavailable due to...”
Receiving an annual companion voucher:
- Companion vouchers are deposited into the guest’s account 30 days after their annual spending period ends, if they’ve met the spending qualification.
- New registrants get a companion voucher immediately.
- Sample language: “Voucher available 30 days after your spending qualification period ends.”
- This is a rare instance of “voucher” standing on its own because space is quite tight and it’s nested under a header labelled “companion voucher” already.
Companion voucher exchange rules
MC2 exchange options
1. 5,000 WestJet points
- Redemption options: flights, flight extras, WJ Vacations, Rewards eStore
- May include partner brands starting in late 2025, but not confirmed yet.
2. 25% off an Economy cabin booking
- Applies to the base fare only
- Discount codes require email confirmation only.
- Sample: “For a round-trip flight for one guest. 30-day advance purchase required. Blackout dates may apply.”
MC4 exchange options
1. 30% off an Economy cabin booking (applies to base fare only, not ancillaries)
2. 2 Lounge vouchers (not transferrable)
3. $200 WestJet Vacations credit
4. $200 Sunwing Vacations credit
Technical restrictions: WestJet and Sunwing Vacations credits are delivered by email only. The business does not retain an internal record of these codes, so the guest must keep them for future reference. Exchanging vouchers for Vacations credits requires first name, last name, and email confirmation.
MCB exchange options: undecided by the business as of writing (August 2025).
Expiry dates
All companion voucher exchanges now have a “book by” expiry date. This means you need to schedule your flight with your exchange option before the expiry date, but that scheduled flight could occur after the expiry date.
Note: this is a recent change as of July 2025. These exchange options are now managed through a platform called Talon One.
Exchange option deposits
Success messages differ depending on how the companion voucher exchange options are delivered to the guest.
Examples:
- “5,000 WestJet points have been added to your account.”
- “2 lounge vouchers have been added to your account.”
- Disclaimer: “Valid for WestJet’s partner lounges in Canada and select lounges across Europe, Asia and the Caribbean.”
- “We’ve deposited your discount code for {25% off an Economy cabin fare} into your account. We’ll also email details to {Fionna.a@gmail.com} within 24 hours.”
- We created the content this way so that the exchange option’s name could be inserted dynamically from Adobe Experience Management (“AEM”). This helps the content scale better for a wide range of exchange options if/when WJ adds more of them.
- “We’ll email your {$200 WestJet Vacations credit} to {Fionna.a@gmail.com} within 24 hours. Please retain this email to use your credit.”
- Technical restriction: the email that WJ sends to guests is the only record of the $200 Vacations credit. That’s why there’s no mention of depositing it into the user’s account.
Note: All companion voucher exchanges are final.
- Sample: “Once you exchange your companion voucher, it cannot be undone.” (Sunrise language pattern)
Free first checked bag requirements
Both criteria must be met. The payment methods only qualify MC4 & MCB cardholders for a free first checked bag.
- The primary MC4 or MCB cardholder and their WestJet Rewards member must be on the reservation.
- Insight: Most WJ credit card holders were already WestJet Rewards members for over a year before signing up for the card. If not, they are signed up for WestJet Rewards automatically upon approval for the credit card.
- Must pay for your booking with one of the following methods:
- MC4 or MCB card (complete or partial payment)
- Payment with MC4 or MCB can be partial, with no no minimum amount or per cent required. Don’t advertise it that way. Guide guests toward using the card to the fullest. That’s what supports the revenue goal.
- As long as the guest pays partially with an MC4 or an MCB, they can also include a non-WestJet credit card as a form of partial payment—but do not advertise this.
- FlexPay (do not advertise this).
- WestJet points (100% payment)
- WestJet gift card (100% payment)
- Travel Bank credits (100% payment)
- Travel Bank credits and WestJet points
- Travel Bank credits and WestJet gift card
- WestJet points and gift card
- MC4 or MCB card (complete or partial payment)
Payment methods that do not qualify:
- Non-WestJet credit card (100% payment)
- Non-WestJet credit card + Travel Bank
- Non-WestJet credit card + WestJet gift card
- Non-WestJet credit card + WestJet points
Earning WestJet points
Tip: find more details about earning rates and purchase types in the Calculator Updates Content Deck.
MC2:
- Everyday purchases: 1 point per $1
- Accelerated purchases: 1.5 points per $1
MC4:
- Everyday purchases: 1.5 points per $1
- Accelerated purchases: 2 points per $1
MCB:
- Everyday purchases: 1.5 points per $1
- Accelerated purchases: 3 points per $1
Alternate phrasing
- “1 point for every dollar spent”
- “2 points for every dollar spent”
Note: “for” achieves a friendlier, informal tone. We use this in marketing content where there’s usually more space to write. However, “for every dollar spent” takes up considerable space, so we can use “per $1” in tight UI.
